5 Things I Wish Everyone Knew About Therapy

I know starting therapy sounds sort of scary. You sign up to pay to tell your deepest darkest shit to a stranger. Who would do that?! Turns out, a lot of people. And it works. It really actually works. Here’s what I wish everyone knew about therapy.

  1. Everybody cries

Seriously. I don’t think I’ve had a single client who was serious about therapy and didn’t cry. You’re probably going to cry. I kind of expect you to cry, quite honestly. There’s a good reason therapists keep tissues in their office. And you DO NOT have to apologize for it, even if you sob the whole session. That just tells me that you’re feeling your feelings and getting them out, which is exactly what we want.

  2. You can say “no” to me

Therapy is a really really good place to practice setting those boundaries we talk so much about. Set them with me. I’m a great person to practice on! If there’s something that I’m asking about that you’re not comfortable with - speak up! One of my goals is for you to feel comfortable asserting yourself in our sessions.

  3. It’s not as awkward as you think it will be

This is one of the biggest fears that people report to me about therapy. But I promise! It’s not as awkward as it seems it will be. And if it is super awkward - we can process that too.

  4. You can change therapists for any reason or no reason

If I’m not a good fit for you - tell me! I’m not the right therapist for everybody, and I don’t want to be. Not every client I meet is going to think I’m amazing. But if I’m not right for you, let’s find you somebody that is. You shouldn’t have to suffer through therapy with somebody you don’t click with. Research shows us that one of the most important parts of good therapy is a strong therapeutic relationship - that’s the bond between you and your therapist. I want you to work with someone that you feel great about, and I’m happy to help you find that right fit.

  5. It’s totally worth it

For real though. Once you settle in with the right therapist for you and are comfortable enough to dig in and do that work? It’s absolute magic. That I can promise you. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s so so worth it.
