Besties - The Love That Deserves More Credit

Let’s face it… February can be a tough month (that’s why it’s so short) full of unvoiced expectations, societal pressure, and lingering insecurities from middle school dances while a slow song comes on…

This February, as we explore the importance of all types of relationships, let’s talk about the importance of friendships.

This is a love letter to our platonic life partners, our “sit on the bed while I clean my room” friends, the “please can we go for a drive so I can vent” besties, “long distance haven’t seen you in years but talk to you every day” friends, and the “my children are driving me up a wall, please come save me” pals. Those people deserve a shout out and a highlight too.

In a society that often prioritizes romantic partnerships, friendships and other platonic bonds can sometimes be undervalued. Yet, these connections play an equally vital role in our lives, offering companionship, empathy, and shared experiences that enrich us to our core. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, strong social support, including friendships, is associated with better mental health outcomes, such as reduced stress and increased resilience.

The other incredible benefit of prioritizing platonic relationships comes in the form of community care and mutual aid. Community care, the practice of supporting and uplifting one another within our communities, thrives on the foundation of platonic relationships. Whether it's lending a listening ear, offering practical assistance, or simply being present in times of need, our friends and chosen family form a network of support that sustains us through life's challenges. In the spirit of mutual aid, platonic relationships also offer opportunities for reciprocity and collective support. Through acts of kindness, encouragement, and solidarity, we contribute to each other's growth and well-being, creating a ripple effect of positivity that extends far beyond individual interactions.

This February, let us celebrate the beauty and significance of platonic love and community care. Whether it's reaching out to a friend in need, organizing a support network within your community, or simply expressing gratitude for the friendships that enrich your life, honor the power of these connections to nurture and uplift one another.

So to our friends:

Roses are red, v

iolets are blue,

I can’t imagine a world that exists without you.

Happy February to our besties, our communities, and to each other!
